CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Nearly three decades after it was first introduced, a bill that would help repair the lasting effects of slavery in the United States is on its way.

The H.R. 40 bill is set to move forward and now awaits a full vote in the U.S. House of Representatives. It would help create a commission that would be in charge of developing proposals for reparations.

"Full reparations, plus wipe out all consequences of the harms that were committed. And we know there's 400 years of harms,” Kamm Howard of the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America.

Howard was one of several speakers at a zoom Town Hall, organized by U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, who represents the 7th District of Illinois.

"There had to defend the right for black people to struggle for repair and that repair is necessary. And we've also had to fight off challenges by those who wish to belittle our right to struggle for repair," Davis said.
