A man charged with murdering a Loyola University student is now facing an additional felony after corrections officers found a makeshift weapon on him during a jail search.
Jose Medina, 26, was charged with felony possession of contraband in a penal institution after officers discovered a 6-inch shank created from metal and medical tape in his pants pocket.
Medina is already facing murder charges in the March shooting death of Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman, who was killed at a Rogers Park beach.
The Cook County State's Attorney's Office approved the new charge following the search.
