Lurie Children’s Hospital has opened its first specialty pharmacy, giving children with rare or complex medical conditions another way to get medications that can require special handling, monitoring or insurance approval.
The 2,050-square-foot pharmacy opened Thursday at Lurie Children’s Outpatient and Infusion Center, 1895 Arbor Glen Blvd. in Schaumburg. It offers prescription filling and free home delivery, along with help navigating insurance, prior authorizations and financial assistance.
Specialty medications can be used to treat conditions including cancer, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis and endocrine disorders, according to Lurie Children’s. Some require refrigeration, injections or infusions, and can be more expensive than standard prescriptions.
“By bringing specialty pharmacy services closer to patients, we are making it easier to access critical medications,” Lurie Children’s President and CEO Dr. Tom Shanley said in a statement.
The pharmacy is opening ahead of the hospital’s original timeline. When Lurie Children’s and Boston-based Clearway Health announced the project in April 2025, they said it was expected to open in late 2026.
The pharmacy is part of Lurie Children’s 75,000-square-foot Schaumburg outpatient center, which opened last fall and consolidated services previously offered in Arlington Heights, Hoffman Estates and Huntley.
