
(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The extensive pursuit of a man wanted for multiple car thefts came to a conclusion Friday.
27-year-old Devante Davis was apprehended in Dolton Friday morning by Cook County Sheriff officers. Davis had been wanted by New Lenox police since June for an armed carjacking and according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office, Davis was a member of a central Illinois car stealing ring.
He, and five others were trying to allude Illinois State Police during a chase on I-80 near I-355, Will County sheriff’s said. Davis then crashed the stolen BMW on the expressway and subsequently he and his crew left that car and carjacked a woman and her two children at gunpoint, authorities said.
Will County sheriff’s said that with the help of United States Marshals Service and Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force they were able to track Davis down. Their investigation led them to Dolton, where, Will County sheriff’s said, they observed a stolen car tied to Davis parked a few blocks away from a home they had under surveillance. Six men were seen walking from the car to the front door of that home. Will County sheriff’s noted that inside the stolen car were several purses and sets of car keys that appeared to be from other burglaries.
The investigative agencies confronted two of six individuals who had previously entered the home when they stepped out. After one of the men tried to run away, investigators surrounded the house, identifying themselves as law enforcement, Will County sheriff’s said. No one responded, thus, investigators broke through the front door. The wanted suspect Davis, as well as six other people were found inside, Will County sheriff’s said. One of the suspects initially resisted arrest and attempted to pick up a loaded pistol Two juveniles were arrested, one wanted for several carjackings, another for parole violations. The rest of the people in the home were also arrested.
Will County sheriff’s said the pistol and loaded rifle-were recovered as well a small amount of packaged crack cocaine and loose ammunition.
Davis has been transported to the Cook County Jail for a fresh set of charges. At the conclusion of court proceedings he will be transferred to Will County for carjacking charges.
