CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A man was killed and a Chicago police officer was wounded during a chase on the South Side Monday, according to Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling.

It happened shortly before noon, when tactical officers approached a man near South Dante Avenue and 73rd Street for an "investigatory stop." Police said the man, whose identity has not yet been released, took off on foot and started firing at officers. Snelling said he struck one of them in the arm.

Officers returned fire and struck the man. Snelling said he was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center just after noon, where he was pronounced dead.

The officer who was struck in the arm was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Chicago police said the two other officers involved in the shooting were hospitalized for observation.

Snelling the officers were "shaken but will be OK."

The Civilian Office for Police Accountability (COPA) is already investigating the shooting. A firearm was recovered on the scene.

Snelling, at the end of a press conference, said there was not only a lack of respect for law enforcement — but a lack of respect for life, in general, in Chicago.
