CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Just days after a federal jury found a man not guilty of robbing a bank in Little Village because of a very polite note, investigators said he did the same thing while taking money from a bank in Lincoln Park.
Investigators said in Dec. 2021, Mohamed Worku took nearly $600 from a Fifth Third Bank branch in Little Village after handing a note to an employee that said, "give me the money. Please. Thank You."
Federal prosecutors charged Worku with bank robbery.
The Chicago Tribune reported that because the charge requires proof the money was taken through intimidation the jury ruled last Friday that Worku was not guilty of robbery because he didn't threaten anyone.
Investigators said on Monday, Worku handed a note to an employee at a Citibank branch in Lincoln Park that said, "please give me the money. I'll pay it back soon.”
The employee handed over more than $2,000.
This time in addition to bank robbery, prosecutors have charged Worku with bank theft, which does not require proof of intimidation.
