The 23-year-old man was able to give police some information despite being shot in the face. He said he had been fishing in the North Branch of the Chicago River at Carmen Avenue just south of Foster.
He was walking back to his car at about 10:30 p.m. when he was approached by what police described as "several unidentified males." They shouted something at him and someone in the group shot him, and they all ran away.
The man was taken to nearby St. Francis Hospital, where he was initially in critical condition.
