MARENGO, Ill. (WBBM Newsradio) – Police in Marengo say they will increase patrols at the community’s middle school this week after a juvenile reportedly made a threat to bring a weapon to campus.
The Marengo Police Department said it became aware of the threat Saturday and immediately began working with school officials. Acting Police Chief Andrew Kjellgren said a juvenile allegedly made statements in front of others about bringing a weapon to Marengo Community Middle School.
Police said the juvenile has been contacted and that steps have been taken to ensure the student will not be at the school and was not in possession of a weapon. Authorities emphasized there is no danger to the public.
The case is being reviewed for possible criminal charges. Police said no additional information about the juvenile will be released because of their age.
Officers will maintain a visible presence around the school as a precaution, police said. Officials added that the department and local schools take threats seriously and have a close working relationship focused on student safety.
Police encouraged anyone with information or concerns to report them, reminding the community to “see something, say something.”
