The oppressive heat calls for ice cream. Margie's Candies has helped Chicagoans beat the heat for more than 90 years.
"I really love to see people who come as a baby and then come as a grown up," said Maria Gomez.
Gomez has been working at the shop for 35 years and has seen many customers come in and out throughout their lives.
"I have this customer, in kindergarten he came here. Now he's about sixteen, seventeen years old and he's still coming. I love to see that," said Gomez.
The story of the shop began in 1921, when Peter George Poulos opened an ice cream parlor on the North Side. The shop became known as Margie's Candies in 1933, when Poulos' son George Peter Poulos married his sweetheart, Margie Michaels.
The candy shop makes homemade goodies including fudge, caramel apples and ice cream. Customers came by the 1940s style spot to grab a treat and cool down.

Chicago hit 100 degrees on Thursday — the first time since 2012. The heat was so intense that it tied the daily high temperature record the city's seen for this date set in 1947.
The extreme heat will continue throughout Friday, and cool down during the weekend. Chicago has opened its cooling centers as well as public pools and splash pads. Check out this list to find the location closest to you.
