CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Friends and relatives of a Marine veteran killed in a crash on I-55 this weekend are grappling with his death.

Nikolas Hutto was “a joy to be around, always keeping everyone in check and ensuring everyone had what they needed.” That’s what a friend wrote in an online fundraising campaign for the former Marine sergeant killed Sunday night.

Tammy Hutto said everyone who met her son loved him and his five younger siblings looked up to him.

Police said the 28-year-old was changing a tire on the shoulder of the outbound Stevenson near Cicero when he was hit by a pickup truck.

Hutto had served in the Middle East as a Marine and left the corps as a sergeant.

His family said Hutto moved to Tinley Park recently to be with his girlfriend. He was set to graduate with a master’s degree from Penn State next month

State Police told WBBM they’re still investigating.
