'We’re going to know a lot early on': Mayor Lightfoot talks 2020 Election

“We’re going to know a lot early on because Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina are really going to tell us. If Joe Biden is able to pick up one or more of those states, then I think what we’re looking at is a potential landslide," she said.

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lightfoot has been making her way across the city Tuesday visiting polling places.

WBBM Newsradio’s Steve Miller talked with her as she was leaving the United Center Voting Super Site.

Mayor Lightfoot started on the Far South Side early Tuesday morning and she’s making her way north.

“In some areas the turnout is light, but that’s because people in the precinct already early-voted. And what I know from the Board of Elections is that over 50 percent of the eligible voters in Chicago already voted before today, with by early voting or by casting a mail-in ballot," Lightfoot said.

“So I think the turnout is just going to shatter records all over the city.”

And the Mayor will be watching for a couple of things Tuesday night.

“We’re going to know a lot early on because Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina are really going to tell us. If Joe Biden is able to pick up one or more of those states, then I think what we’re looking at is a potential landslide," she said.

Mayor Lightfoot said there’s no intelligence that says the city will have unrest, but she said she believes in being prepared.

“You know, we’ve had a couple of things - minor things that have happened at various polling places across the city, but nothing major by any means. You can’t ask for a more beautiful day on Election Day.”

The Mayor said the Board of Elections is taking social distancing seriously - sanitizing after every voter, and she said that’s slowing things down a little.

She said the city is prepared in case there’s unrest. The National Guard is at the ready here, if needed.

“My hope is Chicago will be a beacon across the nation to demonstrate how it is that you express yourself but you do it peacefully.  But we are certainly prepared for every eventuality.  And I hope nobody’s foolish enough to test our resolve.  Because we are ready.”
