Members of the media get sneak peek of DNC preparations

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Members of the media from around the country have been getting a preliminary look at preparations for the Democratic convention here in Chicago this summer.

Reporters and media executives have gotten a tour and some questions answered about the United Center where prime time Democratic National Convention activities will take place.

Matt Hill, the Convention's Director of Communications, acknowledges the events are almost all geared to getting the party's message out. He said Chicago and the Midwest will pay crucial roles in helping the party tell the story of how well the nation is doing under President Joe Biden and describing the stakes in this election.

"For us, the convention this year is going to be a major opportunity for the president and our party to communicate directly to Americans," he said. "Being here in the Midwest, we are well-positioned to tell stories, to put faces to names of people that have been impacted by the change this administration is making."

Minyon Moore, Chair of the Democratic National Convention, echoed the same sentiments- saying the solid Democratic votes for Biden among most midwestern states were key in landing the convention here.

"Now in 2024, we're going to put a convention on with the blue wall that shows how Democrats are changing the lives of people in the Heartland and all across America."

Christy George, director of the Chicago 2024 Host Committee, said the convention will also be showing off Chicago.

"Our city is diverse and vibrant," she added. "We are home to 77 neighborhoods with some of the best restaurants, arts and cultural institutions, and entertainment in the world."

The convention runs from August 19-22. The Republican National Convention in Milwaukee is in July.
