CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago nonprofit, which has been helping people with mental health issues for decades, is now eyeing an opportunity to expand on the South Side — and it's asking for the community's help.

"Chicago's South Side is really a mental health desert," said Susan Doig, president and CEO of Trilogy Behavioral Health Care.

Since 1971, Trilogy has provided mental health support and services to those who need them, and Doig said that need is even greater on the South Side.

"Black Chicagoans are twice as likely as white Chicagoans to report mental health issues like depression, anxiety and PTSD," Doig said. "However, only one -hird of them report getting the support that they actually need."

To help address that disparity, Trilogy has announced plans to open a 24,000-square-foot Chatham location in 2024 at 85th and State Streets. The nonprofit plans to offer an array of services, including intensive community outreach and a drop-in program that would give folks the opportunity to talk with their peers.

Doig said the idea behind Trilogy's community outreach is to "take the care to the person, wherever they are."

Before it can open, though, Doig said Trilogy still needs about $1.7 million to complete renovations on the property.

"We have a donation option on our webpage," she said. "Any level of donation is welcome. We really want this to be a community effort."

Trilogy will be hosting a fundraiser gala on Nov. 2 at Venue West, located at 221 N. Paulina St. Tickets can be bought here.
