CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - If you’re looking to dodge the heavy traffic and headaches, Metra has a solution.

Starting today, the rail system updated its Union Pacific Northwest Line to include a dozen new weekday trains.

The increased capacity exceeds pre-pandemic service levels and comes as the years-long construction project along the Kennedy Expressway has gotten underway.

“Metra has been monitoring ridership as well as customer feedback, and these schedule changes respond to ridership trends and increase capacity and convenience by expanding peak period as well as off-peak service,” said Metra CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski. “And with a major multiyear rehab project scheduled to start on the Kennedy Expressway, this new schedule allows Metra to provide more commuters with a viable and much less stressful alternative to driving.”

Commuters will find trains at least every 30 minutes during the morning and evening rush hours, along with hourly service at most stations during off peak hours.

You can review the new schedule along with shifted departure and arrival times online.
