Migrants' safety a concern with bitter cold snap on horizon

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The snow and brutal cold heading our way highlight the need for Chicago and the state to move quickly on more shelter for asylum seekers.

The state run-shelter at the former CVS site in Little Village has finally opened to provide housing to families and people with disabilities after delays and false starts elsewhere, but the City said there are still nearly 600 migrants waiting for a place to stay.

Governor J.B. Pritzker said Wednesday he is still waiting for more support from Washington.

"We haven't seen those dollars yet, not nearly what we should. The federal government needs to do a lot more," Pritzker said.

About 260 migrants are staying at O'Hare Airport, and even more are waiting on warming buses and at the City's landing zone in the West Loop.

Governor JB Pritzker called the continued busing of people here from Texas 'inhumane.'

"Nobody thinks this is a good idea, especially in December, January and February in Chicago," Pritzker said.

He said he's working to stop flights of migrants as well.

"In general, you can't tell a group of people or an aircraft that it can't come somewhere. On the other hand, there are lots of things that will be a significant deterrent, and they already are working," said Pritzker.
