CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The manager of a local Venezuelan café says many of the migrants arriving in Chicago are looking for a taste of home, while others are in search of a job.
Miguel Sahagun is a manager at BienMeSabe, where he’s seeing a lot of new faces anxious to try his Venezuelan cuisine. However, he said not having a permanent place to stay can complicate things.
“Some people find out about us and start coming,” Sahagun said. “But then, they move to a different area of the city and stop coming.”
He said the business boom is no surprise as buses continue arriving in Chicago.
“When you immigrate to a different country, you crave the flavors of back home. So yeah, we are one option.”
Sahagun said not everyone visits his café looking for food.
“Sometimes they come in, eat and then apply for a job,” he said. “It’s just walk-ins, looking for a job.”
But Sahagun said unfortunately, he’s not in a position to hire, and calls the entire situation “heartbreaking.”
