(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A woman was killed, and her granddaughter was recovering after what Chicago police said was an intentionally set fire at a South Side home over the weekend.
Chicago police said a man threw a Molotov cocktail through the window of a row home on South Green Street near West 32nd Street around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday. The man was then seen running north in the alley wearing all black.
A 54-year-old woman named Charnette Walker was killed in the fire. Two boys had rushed in to help before firefighters got there.
Shareia Raymey told CBS 2 that she and other members of the community express their condolences to the affected family.
"We love you," Raymey said. "We are so sorry that you had to endure this. We're sending our heartfelt condolences to this family on this day, because no one knew we would wake up to this nightmare."
Walker's granddaughter, a 12-year-old girl, was expected to recover, officials said.
Chicago police told WBBM that this fire is an ongoing investigation.
