(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Newly vaccinated Illinois residents will get a shot at free Six Flags Great America tickets, under a promotion announced Thursday by Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.

The amusement park company will offer 50,000 free tickets to their parks in Gurnee and Rockford. Tickets will be distributed in part through local health departments and the Illinois National Guard as members support mobile vaccination clinics.

The giveaway comes as federal authorities have given approval for 12- to 15-year-olds to get Pfizer vaccine shots — and, of course, as summer amusement season gets underway.

“I know it’s been a difficult year – but that just makes it all the more exciting to be back at the park. Thanks to the life-saving power of vaccinations, it feels once again like summer’s in the air,” Pritzker said in a news release.

The value of donated tickets is estimated at $4 million.

Six Flags has the Great America amusement park in north suburban Gurnee and operates Hurricane Harbor water park for Rockford Park District.
