CICERO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An investigation is underway in Cicero this morning following a fatal house fire.

At around 5:15 a.m., Flames and smoke could be seen billowing from the two-and-a-half story home near 29th Street and 51st Avenue. Those flames then spread to a second building.

Cicero Fire chief Jeff Penzkofer addressed reporters after crews got the fire under control.

“They threw ground ladders on the side…They were able to get an older woman out, rescue her,” Penzkofer said. “The fire was really heavy in the back, and [on] the second floor, our guys could not make it up there in time, so there were two people that did not make it out on the second floor.”

Those two victims are believed to be a mother and son, the fire chief said.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
