SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Everyone was excited about a visitor to Springfield - who just stayed a couple of days.

The infamous mountain lion that the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has been tracking has been caught. The lion was being tracked by a GPS collar that was fitted a year ago by wildlife biologists in Nebraska.

Most recently, the lion was spotted in Springfield. After it got in someone's yard, IDNR announced in a Facebook post that it made the decision to tranquilize the lion and transport it to the Exotic Feline Rescue Center, a feline sanctuary in Center Point, Indiana that provides homes and medical care for large and exotic cats.

“I am confident that the mountain lion will be protected and cared for at its new home," said IDNR Director Colleen Callahan in a statement. "I also want to thank the families of Springfield for being cautious and keeping their distance while our experts worked to ensure the safety of the community and the mountain lion.”
