NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --The Naperville city council is considering connecting migrants with families who want to open their homes to them.
Many migrants have been dropped off in Naperville, but they get on Metro trains and head to downtown Chicago. Naperville city councilman Josh McBroom does not want local tax dollars used to care for migrants, but he knows there's a problem.
"In my observations, I don't think there's anything humane about what we're seeing as far as the federal government's response...or lack of," he said.
That's why he's asking Naperville officials to consider creating a sign-up sheet for families who want to host migrants in their homes.
"Let's find out who's willing to help," McGroom said.
"You know, we do have a very affluent community, a lot of big homes for individuals that would be willing to house migrant families and if there's people that would do that, God bless them."
Naperville mayor Scott Whirley hasn't said whether he's for or against the idea, but he does want to know whether the city could be on the hook if something goes wrong.
"I'd be concerned about our liability and potential screening and necessary things that are involved in trying to connect families to shelter migrants," he said.
City staff members are going to research the idea of a migrant housing sign-up sheet and the council will discuss it again at a future meeting.
