A Naperville independent living site is getting some help from the state in paying for energy efficiency improvements.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $221,000 in grants to the Illinois Independent Living Center as part of an effort to cut energy costs and improve heating and cooling in low-income residential properties. The Naperville non-profit houses people with disabilities.

IEPA Director John Kim said they’ll track the program’s progress, which may provide a template for other affordable housing. The center, along with sites in downstate Cairo and Altamont, are expected to save nearly 363,000 kilowatt hours a year.

The homes had to match some of the funding when they applied for the grants, which come after a winter that saw home heating prices skyrocket.
