NAPERVILLE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - West suburban police are warning residents about a recent spike in cryptocurrency scams.

Naperville Police said since late February they’ve investigated four different scams totaling close to $1 million in losses, which they do not believe are connected to one another.

Victims have ranged in age from 45 to 83, and, while authorities said tactics have ranged from hacking to sextortion, each of the cases have at least two things in common.

Victims never met the suspect in person, and cryptocurrency was used for payment.

In hopes of cutting down on the scams, police are reminding Naperville residents to never give personal or financial information away to unfamiliar people, to avoid crypto, Apple or wire transfer payments and to fight the urge to act immediately in uncomfortable financial situations.
