(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A solar-powered energy system with more than 3,000 panels was formally unveiled Friday in the western suburb of Naperville, and officials say it’s an example of how society can tap sustainable sources.

The city says the 4.5-acre system at the Springbrook Water Treatment Facility on Plainfield-Naperville Road began operating in February. It’s a partnership between Naperville and the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency. The solar “array” was developed by Sol Systems.

“Naperville is a city that has always cared about sustainability, and I am thrilled to see this solar energy system come to life,” Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico said. “Clean energy is critical to our community’s future, and sustainable solutions are best achieved through partnerships, like the one that made this solar energy system possible.”

The solar energy system is expected to generate 1.684 million kWh per year, which is enough power to fully supply 180 Naperville electric customers for a year.

Naperville helped connect the solar energy field with the local grid.
