CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- NASCAR officials were at a Chicago Park District Board meeting, outlining how they are trying to soften the impact of the street race planned in and around Grant Park this summer.
Park District Deputy Revenue Director Lauren Quinn said Maggie Daley Park and Millennium Park will remain open during NASCAR Chicago street race activities, but she admits parts of Grant Park will be closed for a while.
"It has been reported in the press that Grant Park is closed for 84 days this summer.
In reality, the daily public access ranges from as high as 99% and never lower than 47% during those 84 days."
Julie Giese NASCAR street race president talked about community-based programs planned year-round with the schools and about what they're not going to do.
"We have limited our on-track activity to 10 hours or less and I have worked really hard to make sure that we don't have any cars on track before 10 a.m. knowing it is a weekend and we have neighbors."
Because the city approved the contract last year, the park district does not vote on the event, but did welcome the update.
