(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Veterinarians hope not to see you on Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving can be a busy day for emergency veterinarians. Pet owners show up for treatment of issues ranging from food poisoning to injuries stemming from fights with other pets brought to a family party.
Dr. Aaron Jackson , founder and medical director of Midwest Veterinary Surgical Services, says you should make sure your pets stay away from the garbage can:
“I’ve taken plastic forks out of dogs, I’ve taken plastic knives, silverware, anything that can fit in their mouth they can crunch up eat, they will eat and cause obstruction, so there’s a lot of dangers that lurk there,” Jackson tells WBBM.
The Thanksgiving celebration can pose other pet hazards. Keep an eye on your dog or cat if you're in a big group. That's because guests can step on a pet, a pet can get into a fight with another pet at the party, or run out the front door.
Rich foods, turkey bones, and chocolate are the main food borne hazards to pets on Thanksgiving.
Jackson says you can include your pet in your Thanksgiving feast, just don't give your dog or cat food meant for people.
“I’d go to the pet store and some of the pet bakeries and I’d get things that are safe for them to eat but is a special treat for them, that they don’t get all the time,” says Jackson.
