CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Court cases can be complicated, and a global pandemic hasn’t made them any easier, but a new Illinois helpline is hoping to make legal issues a bit easier.
“Illinois Court Help connects people with the information they need to go to court," said Lisa Colpoys, Senior Supervising Program Manager.
Lisa Colpoys is Senior Supervising Program Manager for the newly launched system, staffed with workers ready to address any and all concerns about court cases in Illinois.
“That can include very simple questions,” she said. “Where is your court house? What are the hours of operation? Can I get childcare there? Logistical questions. But we can also answer questions about complex processes that they need to participate in in order to go through their court case.”
Colpoys said it can’t be overstated how crucial it is to understand your rights and resources before coming to court.
“You could have an outcome that is really life changing," she said.
For now, help is available by phone Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 833-411-1121, or 24/7 via text message. Colpoys said hours are likely to expand in the coming months.
