CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Board of Education will vote on whether to take the next step tomorrow toward the building of a new high school on the city’s Near South Side.
According to the school board’s agenda for Wednesday’s meeting, the board plans to take up measures to buy land at 23rd Street and Wabash Avenue for nearly $10.5 million dollars.
If approved, the board would exchange the plot with the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA). In return, the board would get over 1.5 acres of CHA property on 24th and State Streets — upon which the Chicago Board of Education would build a new high school.
The lease would run at least 95 years.
The school board will also vote on whether to spend up to $5 million to have the Public Building Commission do planning and design work for the new school.
The school would serve the South Loop, Chinatown and Bridgeport communities, but there are those in the area who’d rather see the school built along the Chicago River south of Roosevelt Road, in a new community called The 78.
