(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Far North Side Rogers Park community is the home to a new grocery store that has had many hands in the making.

Ryan Whitney is a manager at Wild Onion market and says the co-op, which has about 2,100 owners, is about more than just selling food.

“They're investing in this community. This is for this community and you know, the surrounding communities of Rogers Park, Evanston, Skokie, you know, everybody put their money in and this is, this belongs to all the communities around here.”

Whitney said that the goal is to give back to the people who invested.

“This is definitely a long term investment. I mean, we hope to one day be able to give people, you know, dividends and you know, money back on their investment. But right now, this is a long term project. This is kind of like, I would say, a love project where it's like they're investing in this community.”
