CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The latest crime statistics from Chicago police suggest violent crime is on the decline in the city.

Police Superintendent David Brown said so far this month, shootings are down 22 percent and homicides are down 21 percent compared to the first three weeks of June last year.

He said since the beginning of 2022, the numbers of shootings and homicides are also lower than the same period in 2021.

"Shootings are down 17 percent, and January to June year-to-date homicides are down 9 percent. In the top 55 (police) beats that drive over half the city violence, homicides are down 29 percent and shootings are down 33 percent."

Brown said a big reason for the falling numbers of shootings and homicides is Chicago police have seized more than 5,800 guns and made more than 2,600 gun-related arrests so far this year.
