Tip off to the Rip off: New Year's resolutions to avoid getting scammed

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- When you think of New Year's resolutions, you may picture exercise or weight loss goals, but resolving to protect yourself against scams can save you a lot of time and trouble.

With the new year just around the corner, it's important to remember that people lose billions of dollars to fraudsters who continue to get more inventive and successful every year.

Some simple safety resolutions include never sending payment in any unconventional form. Paying strangers by gift cards, bitcoin, wires, and digital bank payments are always red flags.

Resolve to watch out for impostors who can send phony texts, calls, and emails.

They can also create fake websites and profiles pretending to be government agencies or legitimate companies.
