(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — President Biden's inaugural address is getting a mostly positive, but slightly mixed, review from a local expert on presidential rhetoric.
Ferald Bryan, an associate professor of communications at Northern Illinois University, says Mr. Biden on Wednesday used his Catholic faith effectively to deliver a message of unity and healing.
The new president also referenced the election of Kamala Harris as the first woman and person of color to become vice president, he said, which conveys hope in addressing the nation's racial divide.
Bryan did have a couple of concerns. The speech was a little long, he said. Also, the admittedly powerful celebrity performances at the event may have partly overshadowed Biden’s message, Bryan said.
But he added the performances may also have attracted a larger audience than Biden would have gotten otherwise.
