Michael Goodman, who faces a charge of first-degree murder, is accused of fatally shooting Serabi Medina in the head around 10 p.m. Saturday near Long Avenue and Eddy Street after she reportedly bought ice cream for her and her father.
The child's father wrestled the gun away from Goodman, who was shot in the face during the struggle, officials have said.
Anti-violence activist Andrew Holmes says he has worked with the girl’s family in the past. Serabi's 29-year-old mother was shot and killed five years ago, he said.
An online fundraiser has been organized for Serabi Medina’s family to pay for the girl's funeral expenses.
