(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A judge has ordered a man to remain behind bars, after he allegedly broke into a DuPage County woman's apartment and beat her earlier this week.
Prosecutors said 33-year-old Abelardo Zapata was visiting his ex-wife at an apartment building in unincorporated Willowbrook on Sunday when he broke down the door of another woman living in the building.
Zapata hit the woman's face, then slammed her head into a cabinet for no apparent reason, authorities say. He allegedly took her cell phone.
Investigators say the woman received eight stitches to her head when she was treated at a hospital. She was able to reach police by calling 9-1-1 from another phone, officials said.
Zapata is charged with home invasion, robbery of a person 60 years or older and aggravated battery of a person 60 years or older.
A DuPage County judge on Tuesday ordered Zapata to remain in custody until an arraignment hearing on Dec. 11, officials said.
"The allegations that for no apparent reason, Mr. Zapata kicked in the front door of an innocent woman's apartment and then severely beat her are shocking," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said. "A person's home is their sanctuary and people have every right to feel safe in their homes."
