CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Wednesday's first formal gathering of the new Chicago mayor and the new Chicago City Council was much different than similar meetings in previous years.
It was a relaxed atmosphere for most of Mayor Brandon Johnson's first day running the City Council meeting. He offered compliments to the members and cracked jokes, some landing better than others, and the alderpersons seemed mostly cordial.
Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth, the newly elected alderwoman of the 48th Ward, acknowledged things seemed less contentious than some past sessions.
"I feel that people are taking the hope that they got during the campaign season and brought it to chambers today (Wednesday)...My thought is that we are going to continue on with that spirit of finding that vision that all of us share," Hoppenworth said.
Second Ward Ald. Brian Hopkins went so far as to ask his colleagues to sign a civility pledge to keep the spirit going.
