NAPERVILLE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A year after making history, the leader of a west suburban college is stepping aside.

Just over a year after becoming the first ever woman and person of color to lead North Central College, President Dr. Anita Thomas has announced she will be stepping down at the end of July. That’s when a leave of absence, which was announced in late-May, will come to an end.

It’s still unclear when the leave began and what the reason was.

Thomas came from North Central after serving as executive vice president and provost of St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota.

In a statement, the college’s board of trustees thanked Thomas for her service and said she plans to continue working in higher education moving forward.
