(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After a sudden loss of their child, a northwest Indiana couple developed a religious-based support group to help others — and they’re this week’s Difference Maker.

“‘G-R-I-E-F’ is God’s Relief In Every Family, because every family is going through something,” Ella Wade said.

On Sept. 25, 2015, Rev. Dr. J.C. Wade and his wife Ella received word that their 51-year-old son had died unexpectedly.

“Of course, I asked 1,000 questions because I didn't believe [it],” Ella Wade said.

In 2016, the Wades decided to lean on their faith and turn their pain to purpose. They developed a program called G.R.I.E.F.: God's Relief In Every Family.

“We wanted to do something for other people who experience grief by sharing specific stages to find out how to get some relief,” J.C. Wade said.

The program, which is taught at Ivy Tech Community College in Gary, Ind., features sessions developed for adults, young adults, children and ministers.

“The issues that deal with teens, we address the issues that deal with children, as well as facilitators, what they all do,” Ella Wade said.

J.C. Wade added: “And we have a special class for pastors, and it's called ‘Pastors Personal Pain.’”

Wade said dealing with a sudden loss of a loved one is a lifelong journey — one that doesn't conclude at the end of a Sunday service or counseling session.

“God uses people,” the reverend said. “And that's what God has done for my wife and I: He's using us to share with people in the process of healing as it relates to grief and also mental health.”

The Wades also use Facebook and YouTube to reach their audiences.
