
LAKE STATION, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A man is in custody following a fatal shooting on I-80/94 in Northwest Indiana that police are describing as a road rage incident.
Indiana State Police Sergeant Glen Fifield said the shooting and single-vehicle crash happened shortly after 4 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-80/94 near Ripley.
The male driver of the crashed vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene with a gunshot wound.
The original caller who reported the incident pulled over about two miles south, on I-65 near 61st Avenue, Fifield said. He was taken into custody for questioning. According to Fifield, he is believed to be one of the parties involved.
The interstate was shut down at Rippley for nearly four hours as Indiana State Police conducted their investigation. Lanes were reopened shortly after 8 a.m.
Police will not release any more information about the victim until he is identified by the coroner and his family is notified.
