'Given a second chance': NW Indiana man trapped in truck for 6 days discharged from hospital

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Weeks after being trapped inside of his pickup truck for several days in Portage, Indiana, a man is out of the hospital and speaking out about his experience.

Matt Reum was discharged Tuesday evening from Memorial Hospital in South Bend. He survived six days trapped in his wrecked truck Christmas week beneath an I-94 bridge.

Reum was admitted in the hospital for three weeks. In a statement, he thanked all the doctors and medical staff that helped him in his recovery.

"I may be a little slower getting around than I was four weeks ago, but I’m still going to be moving forward toward a life I am proud of, having been given a second chance," Reum said.

He also had a chance to reunite with Mario Garcia and Nivardo Delatorre, the Good Samaritans who rescued him from under the bridge, as well as members of the Portage Fire Rescue team.

"Those two showed up at the right place at the right time," he said while talking his rescuers. "No possible way I can ever repay- the act of you guys showing up saved my life."
