Oak Lawn joins other suburbs in attempting to prevent unscheduled migrant buses

OAK LAWN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Oak Lawn has joined many other communities attempting to prevent unscheduled migrant busses from dropping off passengers.

"We are a welcoming community and we are a diverse community, but again we do not have the resources to deal with buses that are dropped off-many people that are seeking a better life," Mayor Terry Vorderer said.

He spoke after a handful of people attending the village meeting Tuesday night expressed negative opinions about the migrant situation.

"It's like a cancer that's metasticizing and getting worse," one man stated. "We need legislators that will make Illinois no longer a sanctuary state.

Another said: "A lot of people coming here are not vetted. We don't know who they are."

Other residents also spoke in opposition of "illegal immigrants" and the importance of safety.

The vote, requiring the bus companies to get special permits to make drop-offs passed unanimously. Oak Lawn has not had any migrant drop offs yet, but Vorderer said the purpose of the measure is to prevent that from happening.
