Village Trustees in Oak Park voted earlier this week to table proposal from the police department to spend 112-thousand dollars to install license plate reading cameras.
The trustees and Oak Park residents are divided on the technology. Comments from more than 50 people were read into the record by the village clerk during the meeting.
Some believe the license plate readers will deter against future crime in the neighborhood. Others saw this technology as a way to continue to exaggerate and enforce local economic disparity. Some felt the cameras would create more problems than anything else. While others believed giving police any resources would make the neighborhood safer.
The vote to table the plan was four to three. It will be back before the village board the first week of April.
