Oak Park's Lake Theatre reopens Thursday

Movie theater open amid COVID-19 pandemic

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A west suburban movie house will reopen, and the owner said this time it's for good.

The Lake Theater, operated by Classic Cinemas, in Oak Park reopens Thursday after a year that saw business interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and road work on Lake Street.

The theater has been dark since mid-March 2020.

But, when the theater reopens, Classic Cinemas CEO Chris Johnson said they are staying open.

“I have no plans of re-closing,” Johnson told the Oak Park Wednesday Journal.

Downtown Oak Park Executive Director Shanon Williams told the Oak Park Wednesday Journal that it's "a sign that things are returning back to normal. They are a staple in this community and we are thrilled they will be reopening.”

Additionally, Johnson said all theater managers are coming back, along with many employees.

The theaters will be subject to state capacity restrictions and customers will have to wear a face mask.
