CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An off-duty Chicago police officer exchanged gunfire with a robbery suspect on the South Side early this morning.

Chicago Police said the incident occurred shortly after 4 a.m. near 95th and Stony Island.


The off-duty officer was approached by the armed suspect, and a shootout ensued, police said.

The suspect fled the scene. It's unclear if he was wounded.

The officer was not injured.

CPD's Investigative Response Team remain on the scene.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has already begun their use of force investigation, police noted.
