ROCKTON, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Health officials in the Rockford area sai it does not appear as if very many people became sick after the Chemtool fire in Rockton.
Winnebago County Health Department's public health administrator Dr. Sandra Martell said that of the 1,900 people who filled out surveys following the massive Chemtool fire a month ago, less than one percent indicated they needed to go to the hospital for treatment. But, she added, to prevent further health problems people in the area should avoid smoking, vaping, lighting candles, or even using air fresheners in their homes.
Additionally, Dr. Martell said people should see their doctor if they do develop any symptoms.
Meanwhile, officials said there's been no indication that the air or water were contaminated by material blown into the air by the explosion and fire in Rockton. But they will continue monitoring the air and water in the surrounding area and will oversee cleanup efforts.
