CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An organization has posted bond twice for the 21-year-old man who was with 13-year-old Adam Toledo minutes before the teen was shot to death by police last month.
According to CBS 2, the Chicago Community Bond Fund has posted bond for more than 650 people – totaling more than $4 million. They did the same for 21-year-old Ruben Roman on Monday night.
Roman was charged with reckless discharge of a gun and child endangerment; that carried a $15,000 bond. He also had a $25,000 bond for a 2019 gun charge. The Chicago Community Bond Fund paid all $40,000.
Chicago Community Bond Fund Executive Director Keisa Reynolds told CBS 2, the organization did so out of concern the city would continue to make Roman a scapegoat for Adam Toledo’s killing.
“We often prioritize cases that are connected to social justice movements – especially the movement to end police violence,” Reynolds said.
The organization pays bonds for those who can’t afford to pay on their own.
“We made the decision to post bond for Mr. Roman, because we are aware that the city will continue to use him as a scapegoat for the killing of Adam Toledo, which was committed by the Chicago Police Department,” Reynolds said.
Meanwhile, a group of lawyers and community leaders plans to call Tuesday for a federal investigation into the Adam Toledo killing.
