Orland Square Mall implements 'youth supervision program'; minors must be accompanied by adults Fridays and Saturdays

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A southwest suburban mall will begin implementing a new security program Friday that could put a crimp in teenagers just hanging out.

From now on, teenagers who want to be inside Orland Square Mall after 3 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 21.

The new Youth Supervision Policy from Simon Properties follows a December brawl that involved a number of teenagers, several of whom suffered injuries. At least eight minors were arrested and charged as juveniles during the incident.

Orland Park’s mayor calls Orland Square the safest mall in the Chicago area, but many residents demanded something be done to make the mall safer. Orland Park Police Chief Joe Mitchell said the community will benefit from the enhanced family-friendly initiative.

Under the policy, unsupervised guests under 18 must leave Orland Square by 3 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays or be joined by an adult over 21 by that time and stay with that person. Identification will also reportedly be checked by mall representatives.
