(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Police in north suburban Wheeling have attributed the deaths of two active-duty members of the U.S. Navy to a likely murder-suicide.

Police on Sunday found two fatally shot people in the street at Lakeview Drive and Buffalo Grove Road. A handgun was also recovered at the scene, authorities said.

After a preliminary investigation, Wheeling police said it appears Travis Stephens, 37, fatally shot 26-year-old Aja Barnes of Gurnee, and then killed himself.

The two had been in a relationship, officials said. Barnes was visiting Stephens at his Wheeling residence when an argument erupted and spilled out into the parking lot, according to witnesses.

Stephens and Barnes were assigned to the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes.

Police said an investigation continues but added there is “no greater threat to the community.”
