(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A City Council committee heard hours of testimony Wednesday on a proposal that would ban gas heat and stoves in any new construction in Chicago.
The Council's Committee on Environmental Protection and Energy took a deep dive into the proposed Clean and Affordable Buildings Ordinance, or CABO. It would set emissions standards for new construction that would rule out using fossil fuels like natural gas, in favor of electric utilities.
A People's Gas official said the measure would take customers away from the gas utility, which would cause the bills of existing households to rise.
But the committee’s chair, Ald. Maria Hadden (49th), said that’s not accurate.
“We’re not talking about taking anyone off of your base,” she said. “We’re talking about new buildings.”
There will be at least one more hearing before any a vote.
