CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- With early voting underway, a leading advocate is pointing out that people with disabilities may face added challenges during this election season.
The continuing coronavirus pandemic means there are special measures being taken at various polling places. And Angela Williams, President and CEO of Easter Seals, said people with disabilities and often underlying conditions, depend on social distancing, cleanliness, and accessibility.
"Making sure that polling places are not in facilities that are older and perhaps have stairs and don't have elevators, which would prevent someone from using a wheelchair," she said.
Crowds at the precincts present another challenge.
"People with disabilities - it is not necessarily good or comfortable or convenient for them to be waiting in long lines," she said.
So Williams urges all of us to remember all of our neighbors, and see if they need assistance.
"Making sure that people with disabilities - they matter, they count, and their voices are heard and exercises, which is extremely important," Williams said.
