(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Consumer watchdog groups are calling on Chicagoans to let state regulators know People’s Gas should not be given a blank check.

People’s Gas made three filings with the Illinois Commerce Commission this week and David Kolata of the Citizens Utility Board said People’s Gas has had six straight years of record profits while its underground pipeline replacement program is chronically behind-schedule and over-budget.

Kolata accuses People’s Gas of being unable or refusing to answer questions from state regulators. CUB and Illinois PIRG are urging Chicagoans to contact the ICC to let the regulator know they’re unhappy with the pipeline program and don’t want People’s Gas to get a $402 million dollar rate increase.

“The program to modernize Chicago’s rapidly corroding energy delivery system is on budget and on schedule,” the utility said in a response. “We will continue answering every question the Commission has about our rate filing and the work our crew members do every day to ensure Chicagoans have safe, reliable energy to heat their homes and businesses.”
